How did you guys meet?

Chelsea: It all started with Dr. Love. (But really!) We happened to sit next to each other during my very first class at Vanderbilt University as a Freshman in August 2011. The class was American Music taught by Dr. Lovensheimer (aka Dr. Love). Michael couldn’t help but comment on my eccentric cheetah print and hot pink laptop. If love were a flower, you could say that’s when the seed was planted. We stayed side by side throughout our time at Vandy until Michael graduated in 2013. When Michael decided to stay in Nashville after graduation, we knew our love would only continue to grow. We currently reside in Luxembourg, where we’ve been working and exploring Europe together for the past 2 years.

Tell us about your engagement!

Chelsea: Before visiting my family in Los Angeles for Thanksgiving, we took a trip along the Northern California coast and stayed at Ventana in Big Sur. The night of the proposal, Mike suggested we walk the scenic route along Ventana’s 160 forested acres on our way to dinner at The Sur House. As we strolled through the majestic forest, we stumbled upon a couple taking pictures by Ventana’s Redwood Cathedral. The couple claimed that the “golden hour” lighting was perfect for a photo and offered to take a picture of us with Michael’s phone. As soon as we posed for the picture, they grabbed a professional camera, and Michael got down on one knee. Overwhelmed with emotion, time stood still, and tears of joy streamed down my face. Little did I know at the time, Michael and the photographer had planned it all along!

What was the vision for your wedding?

Chelsea: Knowing early on that we weren’t willing to risk an outdoor Nashville wedding in the summer, our aim was to bring the beauty of the outdoors into the Schermerhorn. Our vision was to create an ethereal landscape using an abundance of white flowers and natural greenery. We wanted our guests to feel as though they had entered a floral dreamland.

What was your theme and what inspired it?

Chelsea: With an enchanted garden party theme in mind, we strove to create an atmosphere that had the elegance of a classical ball, the pure radiance of a clean color palette, and the glamour of a modern fete.

What details were used to create your theme?

Chelsea: A primary goal of ours was to incorporate nature into our ceremony and reception. Because we wanted the table cards to be more of an experience than a display, our wonderful florist came up with the idea of suspending each card on a hanging vine from the ceiling. Michael and I have been fortunate to travel to many cities and countries, especially while living in Europe. To highlight our experiences while touching on our love for the outdoors, we named the tables after a plant native to each of our favorite destinations. Perhaps the highlight of all the decor was using a live, 15-foot tree adorned with flowers as the centerpiece of our reception.

Where did you splurge? Where did you save/DIY?

Chelsea: In order to achieve our desired lush garden look, we knew we would need to splurge the most on florals. Our florist was able to come up with ways to repurpose many of the flowers from the ceremony into decor for the reception, which helped manage the cost.

What words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning?

Chelsea: Don’t be afraid to make it your own. You will get lots of opinions from family, friends, or vendors, but at the end of the day, you should plan a wedding that reflects you as a couple. Remember what you’re celebrating, and be sure to devote time toward making your ceremony meaningful. You might feel pressured into hosting the “perfect” party, but the most important part of the day is the coming together of two souls as one.

Can you share any special moments or highlights from your wedding day?

Chelsea: We had the time of our lives on the dance floor and literally danced the whole night. We’ll never forget dancing on stage with the 13-piece band and having them parade us out to our send-off while playing “When the Saints Go Marching In”. It felt like we were celebrating in the streets of New Orleans!

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding?

Chelsea: One of our favorite details was the “Generations of Love” table, which featured wedding portraits of our ancestors dating back as far as the 1800s. It was a special reminder of where we came from and the importance of family. We will certainly be passing along this tradition to our descendants.

So dreamy and perfect! Congratulations Chelsea and Michael! Your floral filled luxurious wedding is one we’ll never forget!
