Tell us about Lincoln Photography + how long you’ve been in business.

Rachel with Lincoln Photography: I grew up with a point-and-shoot film camera in hand traveling throughout Europe and Egypt, and learning multiple languages. I’ve always had a passion for exploring, immersing myself in other cultures, and documenting my experience with an artistic eye. By my senior year of college in 2011, I’d been in business for a year and was skipping classes to photograph multi-day weddings around the east coast, and eventually began booking weddings in Paris, LA, and Hawaii. I’ve learned from the best in the industry, won awards for my portraiture, and published two books. I hold a Master’s in New Media Photojournalism from the Corcoran College of Art + Design (prior to the merger with GWU).

How did you get started in weddings?

Rachel with Lincoln Photography: I was on the path to becoming an interpreter, dreaming of traveling the world and being immersed in other cultures. But, a professional photo was taken as I performed tango for an international charity event changed my life course. I realized then, the thrill of seeing a beautiful image of myself, full of passion for life, was something I needed to give to others.

What’s the philosophy behind your company?

Rachel with Lincoln Photography: A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime, magical celebration with your closest friends and family, and years later, the memories you relive through your photos should reflect the love and joy you shared. My approach to wedding photography combines my photojournalism experience, my fine art education, and decades of dancing to unobtrusively and intentionally create masterful images that make time stand still.

What are your strengths compared to other photographers?

Rachel with Lincoln Photography: Learning three languages and living abroad helped me understand that communication is more than the language we speak. After 15+ years of helping couples prepare for the photography aspect of their wedding day, I have the experience to hear and implement their vision, make appropriate suggestions to the timeline, and can easily adapt to an evolving situation. My approach to wedding day portraiture draws on my ability to portray emotion and personality through movement. A lifetime of dance performances and competitions has taught me the importance of precise, intentional movement, and provided me the ability to help anyone to move with grace. I know how many hours – months – of effort go into creating the perfect wedding day, and that every detail has a purpose. Through my Master’s degree in new media photojournalism, I gained insight into letting a moment unfold naturally and candidly, to document raw emotion. I can tell a story with a single image, or compose a coherent series, bringing every step of your story to life. I guide couples through portraits with creative direction to create natural intimacy. I understand the fast pace of a wedding day’s schedule and have the experience to know how to photograph each moment without making it feel rushed. My experience photographing during the brightest of afternoons and the darkest of candle-lit dinners ensures couples come away with bright, accurate images.

What attracts couples to your business (+ describe that couple!)?

Rachel with Lincoln Photography: My wedding clients are adventurous, elegant, and have a great sense of humor. The couples I work with value my attention to detail; my ability to capture precious moments without intrusion; the clear, gentle posing direction I give to the bride, groom, and family members; and the scheduling guidance I offer prior to the wedding so photos are planned for ideal light and timing throughout the day. My couples consistently rave that not only did I capture unique, beautiful images that exceeded their expectations, but I made it fun and easy. They don’t feel overly posed and appreciate the authentic, intentional memories we’ve created. As a professional artist and photographer, my task is more than just taking pictures. My clients trust that I will capture the atmosphere, mood, and energy of their special day.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about Lincoln Photography?

Rachel with Lincoln Photography: I speak French, Spanish, and some Arabic, and have been a tango and swing dancer for 20+ years. My experience living in multiple countries taught me how to communicate with people from all walks of life, a skill that has become invaluable to my photography and one that helps me make my clients feel instantly comfortable while they’re in front of the camera.
