Tell us about The Clean Plate Club + how long you’ve been in business.
Monica: Clean Plate Club started out of my house in January of 1980! Heading into 41 years is hard to believe. My son Chris Holmes came on board with CPC as a partner in 1999 after graduating from culinary school and has helped grow the company.
How did you get started in weddings?
Monica: The first wedding that I was asked to cater was for Naomi Judd of the mother daughter country duo, The Judds. At the time I was catering out of my house and when word got out to the catering community I was catering this high profile wedding the caterers started turning me into the health department. This forced me to find my first legitimate kitchen after 6 years of catering from my home. The first event that I did out of my Health Department permitted kitchen on Charlotte Pike was Naomi’s wedding.
What’s the philosophy behind The Clean Plate Club?
Monica: We like to create events that reflect the tastes of our clients so everything we do i one of a kind. I have never created a package even though we are asked sometimes for. I just don’t think it is that simple and that one size fits all. I am not saying this is not the smartest business model but its the way we have done my entire run! We like to make it as easy and stress free as we can for our clients so one sales person sees them through from start to finish. Great food, ease of the process and custom menus are what we do best!
What are your strengths compared to other caterers?
Monica: I don’t know a lot about what others do because we stay pretty busy and focused on our business. I think our custom menus and transparency are strengths in our company.
What attracts couples to The Clean Plate Club?
Monica: I have noticed a lot of potential clients when they reach out to us say they are “foodies” and have either been to a wedding we have catered or have friends who have worked with us. Again it goes back to those custom menus built just for the client! We have trained chefs who can create anything from fine dining to a delicious Southern meal. We have catered fusion meals of Indian and Vietnamese & French food to name a few. We love a challenge and being able to think outside of the box. There is a lot of beef tenderloin served in this town and it gets old but it’s always popular!
What is the most innovative new product, service, style or other aspect of your industry that brides and grooms might appreciate?
Monica: Right now I think the changes to the industry from Covid is on everyone’s mind. We are working here in this slowed down time thinking through how to best keep people safe and not take away so much for the design and beautiful aesthetics we are known for. Lots of research and listening to other caters in the industry as we all try to navigate this new and uncharted territory.
