Tell us about Darien Photography + how long you’ve been in business.
Darien: I am the owner and the artist at Darien Photography. I have been a photographer most of my life, but I created “Darien Photography” and registered my company name in 2007 and I recently became an LLC. Based in Nashville, I travel to where my clients take me. Every couple is unique, so I tailor their wedding photography experience to what they need. People hire me for my point of view, and it is their trust that makes it possible for me to deliver images that are true to their love story. My style is naturally refined with true-to-color images where true skin tones are a priority. I blend documentary and editorial photography effortlessly, and include a good bit of black and white images that have been described by many as having a classic Hollywood vibe, which I am not mad about since I drew inspiration from movies a lot.
How did you get started in weddings?
Darien: I grew up in a family with more than a handful of visual artists, architects and musicians. My parents’ had a collection of prints that always fascinated me. The images were conversation starters my parents used to tell us their story of times before we were born. I was particularly drawn to their wedding photos, which were not many, but they were so beautiful, black and white images that looked like stills from a classic hollywood movie. I also loved browsing my dad’s National Geographic and Life magazines, the pictures and their stories were so interesting to me. My parents also documented our family life with photos, and let me use their cameras since I was very young. I knew that when I grew up I wanted to work in something creative since I used my dad’s camera for the first time at 11, I was hooked. I have a major in journalism with a cinema studies emphasis, I officially learned photography in college and continued my education in NYC. I entered some contests and won some awards that boosted my confidence to start a business. Weddings have most of what I like to photograph.They happen in beautiful locations. The couple is in love, they want to be photographed, most everyone in attendance is happy, dressed nicely, in a celebratory mode, and I get to photograph candids, documentary style, detailed pictures, photos with a sense of place, and portraits, all in the same event. My first weddings were of friends and friends of friends. I didn’t know what I know now about the whole customer experience and wedding industry, but I guess I did a good job, since word of mouth helped me grow my business; I am grateful for it.
What’s the philosophy behind Darien Photography?
Darien: I believe that wedding photography carries an emotional impact, not only from the images, but from the service I provide to my clients from the moment they inquire, until they have prints and/or album(s) in their hands. It is important that my clients’ experience with Darien Photography is as beautiful as their images. I take the time to get to know them and what is important to them before their wedding, and I work closely with them and their creative team to make sure that the vision for their day is captured in their photos, and then some. I love working with multicultural couples, people who may be getting married for a second time (I’ve been there), and I am committed to diversity, equality and inclusion LOVE IS LOVE
What are your strengths compared to others in your category?
Darien: With my work, I portray the very human need for connection, capturing spontaneous and intimate interactions in a nonintrusive way. My educational background is in journalism and film; I am drawn to the visual arts. I’ve taken pictures professionally for over two decades — bringing artistry, sensibility, expertise and a calming presence to the wedding celebrations I photograph. I am well traveled, and have lived in the most amazing cities in the world. Born and raised in Mexico City, 4 years in NYC, and now based in Nashville, TN. I understand and relate to couples who have a multicultural background, and/or love to travel. Bilingual in English and Spanish, I am known for my approachable professionalism, ability to adapt to diverse audiences, and seamlessly blending candid and posed imagery to document love stories. Skilled in both digital and film photography I provide honest, and polished, imagery that feels true to the essence of my clients’ story, while ensuring a stress-free experience and excellent collaboration with wedding planners and creative teams. To prevent the burnout a lot of wedding photographers feel, and to give the client experience my couples deserve, I only take a few weddings per year. I don’t outsource editing because I enjoy every step of the creative process and the editing is part of my point of view and artistic voice. My clients feel special, because they are.
What attracts couples to Darien Photography?
Darien: If you ask me for a wedding I would have loved to photograph, without a doubt I’d say: JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s intimate, secret wedding. For me, that is the epitome of “marriage comes first” and focusing on what really matters. Their wedding chapel had no AC or electricity; their reception was on a wraparound porch; they had kids singing, people toasting; and they both looked amazingly beautiful and happy. What to say about her dress? Perfection once it was on; some dress mishaps were actually the reason why the ceremony started hours late. The photo of them as they come out of that tiny chapel is iconic, a reminder to focus on what’s important despite the circumstances. I have been fortunate enough to have couples who have been amazing to photograph. Their deep love for each other is what makes the photos special. My ideal-couples love photography, too. They know that at the end of the day, their photos are the tangible legacy of their love. They expect me to observe as I seek for the unexpected moments and details of their celebration, and want me to capture them as they are. They want wedding photos that show the meaningful interactions and emotions that make their relationship unique. Their marriage, and their guest’s experience, takes priority over a list of photos to take. Some may follow a few traditions, but most bring their own meaningful spin on things. Creativity and intentionality matter to them. They want to be present and enjoy their celebration without following trends. They know what they want: they value travel, culinary experiences, and culture. My ideal clients already love my work and how I combine documentary with editorial style to tell visual stories. They like how my photography is inspired by cinema, classic film stock, true-to-color and natural skin tones, with a generous amount of black-and-white images in their collection.They make prints, enlargements, and most of them choose to trust me with the design of their wedding album, where their images flow like the stills of a movie, one that you can hold with your hands and share with generations to come. When I photograph your wedding I see myself as the witness and documentarian to your special day, and the photos I take as the visual legacy of your love story.
What is the most innovative new product, service, style or other aspect of your industry that brides and grooms might appreciate?
Darian: We are going back to what matters, people are looking to be more authentic instead of performing on their wedding day. I love this “trend” and I hope it is here to stay. I adore weddings where the couple is so into each other and into having a great time with their family and guests that they don’t stop what they are doing to pose for me. I do love portraits, and there is always time for them, but there is something about those genuine moments of intimacy that become instant favorites.
