Larry Bagby, best known to fans as the teenage bully Ice (aka Ernie) in the 1993 Disney classic Hocus Pocus, and his wife, Veronique Bagby, recently sat down to talk about their magical journey from a Facebook group connection to a one-of-a-kind wedding in Salem, Massachusetts. Their story is a true testament to finding love later in life, proving that some spells are meant to last.
A Chance Encounter: From Facebook Group to First Date
Larry, also an accomplished actor and musician with roles in Walk the Line and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, shared that the very film he is most recognized for is the reason he met Veronique. It all started in a Hocus Pocus Facebook group.
“I caught this one comment from this beautiful French Canadian girl,” Larry recalls. Against his usual nature, he added her as a friend. Veronique, a single mom of three from Windsor, Ontario, had simply commented that she had a crush on Larry’s character, Ice, when she was little.
Their first in-person meeting wasn’t just a simple dinner—it was an epic 10-day first date in Los Angeles in December 2022. Larry, acting as the tour guide, showed Veronique his childhood home, favorite foodie spots, and the Walt Disney lot where he was cast in Hocus Pocus. Larry proposed two and a half months later on Valentine’s Day.
“My dad told me before he passed… ‘You’re gonna meet the right girl and have the family of your own.’… it really felt like my dad had something to do with this.”
A Whimsical, Whirlwind Wedding in Salem
The couple chose to tie the knot at the perfect intersection of their relationship: during the annual “It’s Just a Bunch of Halloweens” cast event in Salem, MA.
On Sunday, October 5th, Larry and Veronique had an incredibly intimate and Hocus Pocus-themed wedding at the Pickering House, the oldest house in Salem. The event was a flurry of activity, and the ceremony was squeezed into a tight window between events.
Hocus Pocus Wedding Highlights
- The Lost License Scare: The ceremony nearly didn’t start on time! The couple frantically searched for their marriage license and finally found it tucked away in Larry’s guitar case.
- The Black Flame Candle: Their friend and officiant, Brian, made the ceremony a Hocus Pocus tribute. Instead of a unity candle, they lit a black flame candle.
- Dead Man’s Toes: Their wedding rings were presented using the iconic “dead man’s toes.”
- The Decor & Guests: The backyard was transformed with spooky decor, including hay bales and pumpkins, thanks to their friend Danny Wicked. Cosplaying witches made a surprise appearance, and the Hocus Pocus crew—including Jason Marsden (voice of Binx), Omri Katz (Max), and Vanessa Shaw (Allison)—were there, acting like family.
- “Something Borrowed”: Veronique wore Vanessa Shaw’s (Allison) veil from her own wedding.
- The Cardboard Best Man: Larry’s close friend and co-star Tobias Jelinek (Jay) couldn’t attend due to work, so they brought a cardboard cutout of him to the wedding, the parade, and all the weekend’s events.
- The Grand Gesture: Later that evening during the film commentary at the Cabot Theater, Larry played a beautiful video tribute with a song he wrote for Veronique, a moment that touched everyone present.
Despite their busy schedule, Larry’s sister, Christie, advised them to take a moment and “soak it all in.”
Future Plans
They are looking forward to planning a tropical honeymoon, with Hawaii being Larry’s top choice. Next up, Larry will be heading to Nashville for a few days—a city he hopes to visit with Veronique soon.
The couple is excited to celebrate their marriage with family and friends who couldn’t attend the Salem wedding, with celebrations planned for Montreal and potentially Los Angeles and Utah.
Larry’s connection to Hocus Pocus not only changed his career but gave him his wife and “Insta-family,” proving that their journey is “not just a bunch of hocus pocus anymore.”
