When it comes to wedding planning, flowers play a crucial role in setting the tone and enhancing the beauty of the celebration. However, many couples find themselves wondering, “Why do wedding florals cost so much?” To shed light on this topic, we sat down with Maegan Ferguson, owner of The Floral Pop, a Nashville-based floral design studio. Maegan shares her journey into floral design, the intricacies of pricing, and expert advice on maximizing your floral budget.
Maegan’s Journey into Floral Design
Maegan’s love for design started with interior design, but after completing an intense internship, she found herself yearning for a more creative and freeing path. While working as a nanny, she took on a part-time job delivering flowers for a local florist. That experience sparked her passion, and she quickly transitioned into wedding and event florals, drawn to the joy and romance of weddings.
In 2020, Maegan began planning her own floral business, officially launching The Floral Pop in May 2021. Her love for storytelling through flowers, combined with her attention to detail, has made her a trusted florist in Nashville’s wedding scene.

Why Do Wedding Flowers Cost So Much?
Several factors contribute to the cost of wedding florals. Maegan breaks down the key elements that influence pricing:
1. Seasonal Availability
One major factor in floral pricing is whether the flowers are in season. Many couples request specific flowers, such as peonies, without realizing that availability depends on the time of year. Maegan advises couples to consult with their florist about seasonal options, which can be more cost-effective.
“For example, Icelandic poppies and dahlias are stunning, but they only thrive in specific seasons. If a couple wants a flower that isn’t in season, they will pay a premium for it,” Maegan explains. “A knowledgeable florist should be able to recommend beautiful alternatives that fit both the aesthetic and the budget.”
2. Domestic vs. International Sourcing
Maegan prioritizes sourcing flowers domestically when possible and loves working with local farms in Nashville, particularly for seasonal dahlias. However, many flowers are imported, which affects costs due to shipping and handling.
“It’s kind of amazing to think about how wedding florals come from all over the world—roses from Ecuador, tulips from Holland, and more,” she shares. “But shipping costs, tariffs, and handling all add up.”
3. Planning and Preparation
Creating wedding florals isn’t just about arranging flowers. Maegan meticulously plans each order, building detailed recipes for every bouquet, centerpiece, and installation.
“I break everything down in a spreadsheet—every stem, every bloom, and its cost,” she says. “That ensures I stay within budget while having a buffer in case of damage or last-minute needs.”
She typically orders 5-10% more flowers than needed to account for potential wilting or breakage, ensuring every arrangement looks flawless on the big day.

Maximizing Your Floral Budget
If you’re looking to make the most of your floral budget, Maegan offers these expert tips:
- Be Open to Alternatives: If your dream flower is out of season, trust your florist to recommend a comparable option.
- Prioritize Key Floral Moments: Focus on statement pieces like the bridal bouquet, ceremony arch, and sweetheart table arrangements.
- Repurpose Arrangements: Use ceremony florals for the reception to get the most value out of each arrangement.
- Communicate Your Budget Clearly: A skilled florist will guide you toward options that align with your vision and budget.
Flowers are an investment in the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of your wedding day. With careful planning and expert guidance from florists like Maegan Ferguson, couples can achieve breathtaking floral designs without breaking the bank.
