Tell us about Fox & Fig Photography + how long you’ve been in business.

Sarah: Hiii! I’m Sarah Cannon, owner and lead photographer of Fox & Fig Photography. I’m dual based in Tennessee – right outside of Nashville, Tennessee and right in the Wears Valley area of Sevierville, Tennessee. However, I travel all across the United States capturing lovers wherever they find themselves – from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, to the Redwoods of California, to the beaches of Florida! I have been full time for 2 years now, as 2022 will be my third year as a full time photographer! I could not love my work more. My journey to photography isn’t the typical one – I have a background in agriculture and animal science, which is what my undergrad and graduate work was in. I still live and work on the family farm, which is one of the amazing freedoms photography has given me. I actually started full time only because of a mishap in transitioning jobs in 2019, when I found myself without a full time position and decided it was the best time to really push myself into my passion (with the encouragement from my family and friends!).

How did you get started in weddings?

Sarah: I started shooting weddings in 2019, with my first full time year being 2020 (what a year to start full time, right?). I didn’t have a traditional route of going into second shooting, but rather went from shooting wildlife and content alongside my husband, who is also a photographer, into shooting weddings. My training in fast paced environments and adoration for storytelling made me feel confident from the get-go, and since then, “the rest is history” as they say!

What’s the philosophy behind Fox & Fig Photography?

Sarah: My philosophy and purpose is to tell a story, not take photos of a day. Whether I am shooting engagement, weddings, or elopements – my goal is to give my couple back a gallery that allows them to have an immersive experience back into the emotions that they felt on that day. I don’t shy away from any portions of the day – my couples often find the “imperfect” photos to be some of their favorites to show others – from the silly faces made at one another, to the big laughs with friends, to the moments no one realized were happening, like a grandma filming the first dance on her iPhone with tears in her eyes. Those moments matter to me as much as they do to my couples – I want to give back images that truly reflect their lives joining! This doesn’t mean, however, that I only give prompts. I know it is easy to set categories and want to lump everyone into them, but I truly try to be a fly on the wall when it’s necessary, but I also believe every couple deserves amazing portraits of their families and themselves – and I happily set in to direct my couples into the best poses and positions to make them feel their most beautiful when they look back at those images.

What are your strengths compared to others in your category?

Sarah: I am candid, open, and honest with my couples. I want them to have the best experience with me from start to finish, and I believe part of my job in order to give them that, is to set them up with the best information from the start. I help all of my couples prepare for their engagement session, then the wedding day, and assist in creating their timeline in order to ensure they have the best opportunity to experience their day in its fullest. I also LOVE helping couples feel their best, and continuously work on my posing skills to ensure their experience is fluid, fun, and feels easy! I work hard to stay quick and easy going so that my couples have tons of beautiful images that reflect themselves.

What attracts couples to Fox & Fig Photography (+ describe that couple!)?

Sarah: I’m not going to tell you how to live your story. There are so many photographers with opinions on first looks, timelines, this, that, and more. I’m not that person. I’m here to tell your story, however it goes down. I am happy to help with my experiences and what I’ve found to work well, but ultimately, it is my honor and my job to be there to capture the day, their way! My ideal couples are pretty rad people themselves – outgoing, adventurous, maybe even what some would call a little wild or hippie. They are ready to take on the world together, no matter what life throws at them. They’re ready to showcase their love – in their own way – whether that be with a party with their closest 250 friends, or on a mountaintop with just an officiant, me, and them! They value taking time to spend together on their wedding day, and they want incredible photos to match their incredible vibes.

What is the most innovative new product, service, style or other aspect of your industry that brides and grooms might appreciate? (Think trends, major changes, etc.)

Sarah: I do at least 2 educational events per year – to keep myself super current on upcoming wedding trends, new locations to take engagements and elopements, posing, editing, and more. I also offer a lot of assistance to my couples, and I’m as involved as they desire me to be. I’ve helped brides choose wedding gowns, couples choose their elopement locations, et cetera!

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your company?

Sarah: I love what I do, and I love my couples. I pour my heart and soul out every time I pick up my camera. I want every single couple that becomes a Fox & Fig couple to feel adored and cared for!
