Tell us about EastLeigh Desserts + how long you’ve been in business.

Leigh: EastLeigh Desserts officially began in June 2018 in Nashville. However, as the owner of EastLeigh Desserts, I operated a part-time baking business for 4 years from 2010-2014 when I lived in a different state.

How did you get started in weddings?

Leigh: The very first wedding cake I ever made was a three tiered cake that reflected a mountain scene because the wedding couple are avid hikers/outdoors enthusiasts.

What’s the philosophy behind EastLeigh Desserts?

Leigh: The philosophy behind EastLeigh Desserts is simple. We strive to connect with our clients to create a top notch product that enhances their special day. I love weddings and being surrounded by love. I can feel the love the couple has for each other when we meet at a cake tasting and I get to see it reflected by their family and friends as I deliver the cake to the reception venue. It is such an honor to have a small part in a significant milestone in someone’s life and it is not something I take for granted.

What are your strengths compared to others in your category?

Leigh: One strength is flexibility in cake and dessert offerings. I revise my menu often and like to think outside the box with cake flavors. I offer in-person cake tastings which I think is very important. It’s surprising to hear that not every baker does this. This time is invaluable to me to learn about what the couple really wants and to be able to help guide them to realizing their wedding cake vision and to answer all of their questions directly.

What attracts couples to your EastLeigh Desserts?

Leigh: Based on feedback I’ve received, couples appreciate having in-person cake tastings and having the chance to get all of their questions answered face to face. They like the different cake flavors offered and like having someone who can be flexible with them to get them what they want.

What is the most innovative new product, service, style or other aspect of your industry that brides and grooms might appreciate?

Leigh: As far as cake goes, using color in wedding cakes has become very popular. From pressed dried flowers on a cake to sculpted buttercream flowers, couples are not afraid to venture away from traditional white cakes. Dessert tables are also gaining in popularity. There was a time when a guest may have been horrified to see donuts offered at a wedding reception but I think that shaking up tradition is a good thing. I love weddings that are so personalized to the couple because it makes them unique and stand out. My advice would be to do what feels good to you. It is your day after all.
