In a heartwarming story that melds athletic legacy with timeless romance, Polina Edmunds, a retired figure skater and Olympian, recently married Ian Bast. This celebrated former skater, known for representing the United States in Sochi and winning the 2015 Four Continents Championship, has left the ice but taken to a new journey in love. Nashville Bride Guide had the chance to hear all about Polina’s wedding planning, proposal story, and bridal style. (Photos by Ash Baumgartner)
A Love Story Born in College
Polina and Ian’s journey began in college, where they were introduced by a mutual friend. What began as a casual night out with friends quickly blossomed into a lasting romance. Despite their busy schedules—Polina was still skating, and Ian was finishing school—their connection endured, growing stronger over five years. Ian became a steadfast supporter of Polina’s career, cheering her on from the sidelines and even watching her events online.
The Bali Proposal: A Dream Come True
Ian’s proposal in Bali was as picturesque as a scene from a movie. They had traveled to Singapore for a work conference before vacationing with friends in Bali. Ian planned a private day for them on Nusa Penida, a breathtaking island off the coast. Their day included snorkeling, sightseeing, and ending at a secluded bungalow filled with rose petals and swan towels. Polina recalls that Ian, the meticulous planner, ensured every detail was perfect. Anticipation filled the air as he set up the camera and drone, and when he proposed, Polina was overjoyed, touched by the love and effort he poured into that moment.
A Garden Wedding in Woodside, California
Originally, Ian had hoped for a destination wedding, inspired by his parents’ Cabo celebration. However, with Polina’s large family and desire for a more traditional celebration, they opted for a local wedding at Filoli Gardens, a historic mansion in Woodside. This charming venue, complete with manicured gardens and vintage touches, felt like stepping into another era. Polina loved how the lush greenery and blooming flowers matched her aesthetic and honored her girlhood dreams of a romantic, fairy-tale setting.
Finding the Perfect Dress(es)
Polina’s wedding attire journey reflected her evolution from a young, glam-loving skater to a sophisticated bride. She initially found a sleek, lace dress from Grace Loves Lace, envisioning a chic look. However, after conversations with her family, she decided to embrace a more traditional bridal moment and chose a second gown for the ceremony. This “princess” dress, with a classic boat neck and elegant silk fabric, aligned with her vision for an “old money” aesthetic. Polina felt it perfectly suited Filoli Gardens’ grandeur and offered her a treasured “dad moment” down the aisle.
Making It a Destination Wedding at Home
Although the wedding was local, the couple designed a mini-destination experience by booking Airbnb retreats in the nearby Redwood forest for their bridal party. This allowed their closest friends to share in a weekend of bonding and celebration surrounded by nature. Polina cherished these intimate moments in the days leading up to the ceremony, describing them as both grounding and unforgettable.
From the gardens of Woodside to the Redwood trees, Polina and Ian’s wedding was a celebration of their love, values, and unique journey. Polina’s thoughtful choices in every detail—from her attire to the venue—made this day feel like a true reflection of who they are as a couple. For those seeking inspiration for an elegant yet down-to-earth wedding, Polina and Ian’s love story is one for the books.
