How did you guys meet?
Ellie: Josh and I actually grew up together. Our parents have been friends since we were 2 and 3. We even have pictures of us as toddlers playing together. There is not a time in our lives where we did not know one another. We grew up through all of the awkward middle school phases. I actually wanted to date Josh for a year until he finally asked me out. We dated my senior year in high school and broke up before college. One and a half years later and neither of us having dated anyone else, we got back together. I always say I have known fairly early on since high school though that I would marry Josh.
Tell us about your engagement!
Ellie: Josh proposed at a Christmas tree farm. He had three trees decorated with pictures and cards. Josh and I dated long distance the whole time we were together. While we dated, we would write letters to each other each week. Below the trees laid huge Scrabble letters that spelled out Marry Me. When we started dating in college, we started by going to coffee shops and playing Scrabble for hours. This became one of our traditions. I had never told Josh that I wanted him to propose with Scrabble letters, but he did!
What was the vision for your wedding?
Ellie: I wanted a larger wedding. When thinking about my own wedding, I wanted lots of flowers and pinks. I wanted the barn to feel cozy and romantic. I wanted everyone at the wedding to know that we wanted to bring glory to God during our wedding. I did not want anyone to walk away without knowing that we both were devoted to each other and had committed before them as well as God in a covenant of marriage. I also wanted our wedding to be fun! We wanted live music and dancing.
What was your theme and what inspired it?
Ellie: I wanted to go for more of a romantic feel. Our wedding was in a barn, but the barn has a beautiful chandelier. We decided to play off of that to help with the feel. There were a few vintage aspects here and there as well.
What details were used to create your theme?
Ellie: We used drapery on the ceiling to provide an airy feeling and used pinks and some older decor items. My favorite all time detail was a print that we got that said, “It was always you.” This hung over a framed picture of Josh and I as toddlers.
Where did you splurge? Where did you save?
Ellie: My splurge was definitely flowers. I loved the feel of flowers everywhere to add to the romantic feel. When we met with Caprice from Enchanted Florist, she was able to perfectly carry out my thoughts. She created this beautiful arch that hung above us during our ceremony.
What words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning?
Ellie: If you can get a wedding planner, it is so worth it. Josh and I planned the wedding while we were four hours away from one another. Emily is amazing at capturing personalities and ideas and putting them in the wedding. She was able to line up everything, and all we had to do was pick and choose. This saved us from all of the stress, and we were able to have fun in the planning without having to work out the not so fun details.
Can you share any special moments or highlights from your wedding day?
Ellie: We had a milkshake bar that might have been the biggest hit from the wedding! We love ice cream and even took some engagement pictures at our favorite ice cream place. My favorite part though was saying our vows. We worked with the person who married us to make our vows, so they were important to us. Hearing the promises we were making each other though was my favorite part of the entire day.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding?
Ellie: Believe it or not, we had planned to get married under a large sycamore tree. We had to go with our rain plan that morning, because there was a huge chance of rain. We honestly thought that it worked out even better. The venue and wedding coordinator were so great at getting everything to work out, no one would have ever known that was our rain plan.
