The special moments spent with them throughout the wedding planning process and even more so the wedding day are some of the most precious! We love gifting Moms and Grandmothers with florals for a wedding day. What are some floral ideas that moms might appreciate?
Melissa: So many of the bride and grooms families host brunches the day after the wedding now. Floral arrangements they can use for their brunch are always appreciated.
What are some floral designs grandmothers might appreciate?
Melissa: Grandmothers tend to prefer traditional wedding florals – pin-on or wrist corsages. It’s important to choose a design that won’t be too heavy for their attire; many summer dresses are too thin to support a large pin-on corsage, so I recommend a wrist corsage in summer months.
What creative designs have you seen for moms and grandmothers besides the traditional wrist corsages?
Melissa: My personal favorite for mothers and grandmothers is to carry a tussy-mussy, or small bouquet. These bouquets are smaller than the bridesmaids. It gives mothers something to do with their hands in photos and walking down the aisle, but can be set aside during the reception so they don’t have to worry about crushing flowers they wear. It also creates an opportunity for the bouquet to be reused during the reception at the bar, cake table, or even to add a pretty touch to the women’s restroom.
What do you think of the grandmother as a flower girl trend? What types of florals would you recommend for this?
Melissa: I think it’s such a sweet way to incorporate your grandmother into your wedding in a way that highlights your special bond with her, but also brings a little levity to the ceremony. I absolutely love the thought of having your grandmother be the flower girl, my own grandmother would have loved to do that. I think a lovely hair comb decorated with flowers, or modest floral halo would be appropriate to adorn your grandmother. Every venue is different, and you’d need to check if she can actually toss petals, but in keeping with the flower girl theme a basket of petals or decorated with a small arrangement would be lovely. If you are religious, a decorated prayer book or bible would also be appropriate.
Is there a specific time you should set aside to give the moms and grandmothers their florals?
Melissa: I feel like mother and grandmothers get short shrift in this area. In almost all weddings there is special attention paid to the moment when the mother pins the boutonniere on the groom. So yes, I think there needs to be a special time set aside for the bride to present her mother and mother-in-law with their florals. In reality however, the mothers tend to be flitting about making sure the last minute details are handled, so I don’t know that it is necessarily practical.
Are the moms and grandmothers expected to wear or carry their florals throughout the entire wedding day or just the ceremony? What is the etiquette?
Melissa: There has been a large shift here in the past twenty years. When I got married, mothers and grandmothers (and aunts and anyone else doing something special on your big day) had to have a corsage. Now, I have done quite a few weddings where the mothers and even grandmothers (though less so than mothers) forego any florals. They want to be unencumbered by a wrist corsage or pin-on. Which is why I suggest a tussy-mussy, which can be easily set down any time.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about florals for moms and grandmothers?
Melissa: I have met with many brides that are deeply concerned that the floral colors they’ve picked will clash with the attire their mothers or grandmothers’ will choose. I think this is not as scary as they think it will be. Coordinating flowers across the entire wedding party feels more cohesive in my eyes, but the option to include neutral ivory or white flowers for these is always acceptable.
