Tell us about Walker2theAltar + how long you’ve been in business.

Krystal: I started out in February of 2020, so it hasn’t been long but it has be successful , busy and rewarding.

How did you get started in weddings?

Krystal: My mother was a home economics teacher and she directed weddings for so many of her former students and community members. I grew up attending and participating in so many weddings. I was living in Utah a couple of years ago and thought about forming a side business , but I just wanted to do something that just made people happy. I thought about selling my art, but then I thought, no because then it would not be my art anymore. My dear friend Tom had got engaged and he mentioned he didn’t know who could officiate his wedding since he was not affiliated with any church. This was the lightbulb moment. I thought about the many weddings I had been in and thought I could put that knowledge to good use! I already had Bachelors degree in Psychology and Religious Studies and to go one step further I got ordained through AMM and Christian Global Outreach Ministries. I was transferred to Tennessee for my job, and a co-worker here said she was getting married and I told her that I was a wedding officiant. She asked me if I would perform her ceremony so I continued my dream of becoming a wedding officiant and made it a reality in February of 2020.

What’s the philosophy behind Walker2theAltar?

Krystal: I believe that EVERYONE should feel respected and loved when it comes to the most special even in one life. A wedding officiant, my services are not limited to a certain belief, lifestyle, age, race or setting. Everyone is welcome in my world!

What are your strengths compared to other officiants?

Krystal: Weddings are specific to the couples themselves. Couples will spent time and money to plan everything out to a tee. The ceremony, however, has not changed that much over time. The ceremonies of today are still the same format, customs and words that our parents and grandparents had in their wedding. If a formal /traditional wedding is truly what a couple wants, I definitely can do that (and have done that) without hesitation. What if a ceremony was crafted to reflect todays couple? What if a ceremony included the guest as part of the ceremony instead of just having them be observers? What if a ceremony was crafted to adjust to the Covid era? These are things I wanted to address and I have done so with great success. My ceremonies are timely yet timeless. These ceremonies reflect the couple and how they would like the ceremony to be. Whether the audience is in person or virtual or both, they can have an active role in the ceremony. My ceremonies are not structured to a specific style, so it can be customized to the style the couple chooses.

What attracts couples to Walker2theAltar (+ describe that couple!)?

Krystal: Most of the couples that have hired me are looking for something outside of the box. These couples have had their ceremony trimmed down due to covid but wanted to include family via Skype or Facebook live and they love the way I incorporate them into the ceremony so they actually get the feeling of being there in person. Couples are often under the impression that they have to do some sort of required in person counseling or they have to claim a religious affiliation of some sort to be married and are relieved to find out that is not the case. I am not affiliated with any religious organization or venue, nor do I expect any couple to be affiliated with any organization. My personality is described as laid back and many couples are surprised at how easy it is for me to adjust to their vision and their situation.

What is the most innovative new product, service, style or other aspect of your industry that brides and grooms might appreciate?

Krystal: In the age of social media, the attention span is short, but what is viewed in that period of time needs to grab and hold the attention. I have crafted a ceremony that is 15 to 20 minutes at the most by focusing on the details that matter and exclude the rituals that add very little to he significance of the event itself. Example: Throughout time, the couple lights candles while a long song plays, the audience awkwardly stares at the couple or checks their Facebook status since its gonna be a while. The couple in the meantime, are wondering why they chose this song and how much longer they need to awkwardly stare at each other in silence. Eliminating this one thing, takes 5 minutes out of a ceremony. This is just one example of course and if they couple wants the candle ceremony, obviously that can be done without issue. I encourage each couple to think about each element and have a testing of that element at home. Practice the candle ceremony with family and friends with your song choice if it is something that is a positive feeling then definitely use it, however if it feels awkward and long you might want to consider other options. My point, my most innovative product, is simplicity and flexibility.
