Emily + Charlie

Arrington Vineyards

10.26.2019

From Kristen of Published + Pretty: Emily and Charlie live in Texas and wanted a true Southern Nashville wedding at their favorite winery, Arrington Vineyards. They got married at the Stone House in the middle of a giant storm, but you would never know from their bright smiling faces! The rain let up just long enough for them to take some stunning photos out in the vineyard, including their vintage pickup truck! The groom had a custom made suit modeled after the movie “Tombstone” – and he looked every bit as handsome as a real cowboy! Their florals had beautiful pops of color, and the groom’s beautiful daughters made the sweetest bridesmaids. Charlie wanted to surprise Emily with a sunflower in her bouquet to remind her of her father, that had passed. It was the most endearing touch, that brought everyone to tears. Emily’s “something blue” were some amazing vintage blue cowboy boots that also wowed! The day was fun, emotional, and the epitome of southern charm.

How did you meet?

Emily: Charlie and I met at an airshow in Midland, TX, where we live. As soon as my friends and I sat down on the lawn for the show, I noticed a very handsome man with strong hands sitting a ways in front of me. I felt very pulled towards him. Over the next few hours, I noticed him (Charlie) trying to check me out by looking behind his shoulder. Towards the end of the show when the audience was invited to stand up and walk towards the airplane runway, I managed to position myself right next to him. Soon conversation between he and I kicked off and sparks were flying high! That was the beginning of our love story and life together.

What is your proposal story?

Emily: We were horseback riding in a beautiful forest in southern Indiana. Charlie’s daughters and my mom were with us as well. I had been quite suspicious that he was going to propose, as he had been quite jittery for several days, especially that morning. We were peacefully riding along through the trees when we reached a spot for a break, and that’s when he and I got off of our horses. Charlie got down on one knee, spoke the most loving and endearing words to me, and asked me to be his wife. My ring shined so brightly amongst the backdrop of the forest floor and trees – it was a truly magical moment. I did black out for some of the proposal due to intense excitement but I remember enough that it was the most beautiful proposal and it was made further special with our most loved ladies there – the girls and my mom.

Tell us a little a bit about your wedding.

Emily: Our vision was to create a romantic, cozy, and intimate setting for us and our closest family and friends. I was particularly inspired by deep jewel tones, vintage decor, texture, and the country setting of Arrington Vineyards.

Tell us about your attire choices.

Emily: I wanted to be a vision in ivory for Charlie! The gown I chose was full of detail, both floral and vintage inspired with a little bit of sparkle – it was perfect for me – except that it didn’t have sleeves! The wedding gown designer was able to add sleeves to my gown, and then my mom (who is a seamstress) further customized the sleeves to fit me perfectly. I went with simple jewelry, a gorgeous handmade hair comb, and turquoise cowgirl boots.

My husband’s attire was inspired by the western wear in his favorite movie “Tombstone”. He found a suit maker (Eric Adler) in Nashville that was able to capture that western style and create a suit that was perfect for Charlie. And I love it too, he looked so handsome in that suit!

What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip?

Emily: The most important aspect of our wedding planning and for our wedding day was to enjoy it all! We relished the fun of planning our big day! Ashley (our wedding planner) helped eliminate much of the stresses of wedding planning and she left the fun stuff to us! Furthermore, Ashley and her team were with us on our wedding day and they orchestrated the whole day wonderfully so that Charlie and I could be totally present for our celebration and enjoy the day to the fullest. Charlie and I have very detailed memories of our wedding day, and those memories are some of the greatest treasures will carry with us throughout our lives.

I think it’s fair to say we splurged on flowers. Cottonwood Floral went above and beyond in making our floral dreams come true! The floral chandeliers and arbor were stunning!

What were your favorite parts of the day?

Emily: Three things stand out to me:

One, my time getting ready with my mom, daughters, sisters, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, aunt, and best girl friends. We had a beautiful suite on the vineyard and we filled it up with laughter, smiles, hugs, makeup, dresses, hairspray, all things girly, and I absolutely loved it!

Two, the moment Charlie saw me for the first time as I walked down the aisle.  Our eyes meeting, taking each other in, taking the wedding ceremony in together, was absolutely breathtaking. I am getting choked up about it now.

Third, the night before our wedding, I was crying about the rainy weather forecast. I was facing that my dream of an outdoor ceremony was likely not going to happen. Alayna, the youngest of the four girls, very cheerfully told me that ‘Rain on your wedding day is good luck!’. She was so sweet. The day of our wedding, it did rain but I did not let the weather bring me down! We married under the tent and it was beautiful! In those moments of saying our vows, the sound of the rain splashing on the tent roof was so peaceful and special. Now, the sound of rain often takes me back to our wedding day.

Tell us about your wedding flowers.

Emily: Jewel tones, romance, and texture were the inspiration for our florals. We wanted to be surrounded by flowers and feel the magic in the air they create. Abby at Cottonwood Floral absolutely nailed it! Her floral arrangements, especially my bouquet, the boutonnieres, arbor, and floral chandeliers were stunning!

Tell us about your wedding cake.

Emily: Our wedding cake was so beautifully detailed and gorgeous! Katelin Hayes’s decorating and baking skills are impeccable. She created exactly what we wanted both visually and in taste! We had strawberry, vanilla, lemon, and red velvet flavors. Our wedding cake topper was handmade from a little shop on Etsy, and it was made to look like Charlie and I. It was such a cute detail on top of our cake and a special memento for us now.

What did you do for favors?

We kept our favors simple and practical – Koozies! Plus, Charlie’s mom made some of her famous sugar cookies in the shape of doves.

Please describe any DIY, handmade, or personal details.

Emily: Our wedding was full of DIY (but not too much), handmade, and personal details!

My mom was amazing in customizing my wedding gown sleeves, more-or-less creating the back of my dress, and making my veil. She also made sleeves for my maid-of-honor and step-daughters’ dresses. Having my mom be so involved meant the world to me. Family made our arbor and frames for the floral chandeliers, our wedding cake stand, little wands with bells, cookies, and Mr. and Mrs. seat signs with ribbons, to name a few things. I searched high and low in antique stores for vintage mini-glasses to use for votive candle holders.

I loved Etsy for handmade items like my hair comb, crochet doilies, and our wedding cake topper that looks like me and Charlie.

We had so many personal details woven throughout, but a couple that stand out to me are the matching pearl bracelets that the girls and I wore to symbolize us coming to together as a family, and we also had a very special lantern aglow throughout the evening to represent my father’s presence on my wedding day.

Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?

Emily: Charlie and I used the cake knife and server from my parents’ wedding. I wore a ring that my mom gave me year’s ago; I wear it everyday but it was especially significant for me to where the ring on my wedding day. I’d say my father’s truck is an heirloom and it was one of heck of an heirloom to have on my wedding day! My family surprised me with the truck. They worked very hard over the last few months leading up to our wedding to finish my late father’s hot rod so that Charlie and I could have it as our get away car. THAT was special. Charlie had a blast driving us on those country roads all the way to Nashville that night, and now my mom drives the truck often up in Indiana. The whole story is really remarkable.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

Emily: Invest in a wedding planner. A good wedding planner will eliminate wedding planning stresses for you and also will make the wedding planning so much easier since she has working knowledge of vendors, caterers, bakeries, and so forth. A good wedding planner will ensure that on the day of your wedding, you and your husband have nothing to worry about and that you can be present during this important day. That peace of mind is everything!

Southern, yet modern — it really doesn’t get much better than Emily and Charlie’s jewel toned Arrington Vineyards wedding! Thanks so much to this beautiful duo and to Chancey Charm for sharing the day with us!
