How would you describe your style as a couple?
Style-wise, I feel like we are more modern; personality-wise, we are very traditional. I wanted a wedding that felt timeless, so we went classic and retro with the theme of the wedding.
Where did you get your inspiration?
A few years ago, my parents purchased an Art Deco style diamond bracelet for me to wear on my wedding day so I was leaning towards a Gatsby style outdoor wedding. When we toured East Ivy Mansion, the vision became clear that we wanted to have a 1920s soirée under the stars.
How did you incorporate that style into your wedding?
East Ivy is such a beautiful property with its soft, neutral exterior and accents of vintage black wrought iron around the property. We decided to mirror those same colors in our wedding. We chose shades of white, ivory, champagne, silver metal tones, and a touch of black.
What was your (or your guests’) favorite aspect of your wedding?
The guest loved three things: One, that we had somewhat of a theme wedding. We encouraged our guest to dress in 1920s inspired attire. Most of the men wore bow ties and suspenders and the ladies looked gorgeous in Gatsby-esque accessories and attire. Almost all of the guests mentioned how much fun they had getting into character. Another oft-mentioned aspect of our wedding was the outdoor garden/pool setting. The guests loved the lighting over the reception area and the custom gobo in the pool that Nashville Audio Video made for us. The third most common guest comment was how good the food by Chef Penelope’s Catering was.
Where did you splurge? Where did you save/DIY?
We splurged on the venue and my dress. We saved by doing the planning ourselves up until the month of the wedding at which time we turned it over to Jamie Lane. We saved on décor because the venue is so lovely we didn’t need to add too much to the space.
Who were your favorite vendors and what made them exceptional?
We loved all of our vendors. Not a bad experience with any of them. We loved working with Chef Penelope she created a menu we felt like would please most of the people and not break the bank either. Vicki at Signature Cakes was amazing as well. Our parents came to Nashville to meet for the first time so we took them to our cake tasting appointment with Vicki. She was so patient and accommodating as we tried about 20 of her delicious cake flavors. Since we could choose three different cake flavors, we let each of our parents choose a flavor and we chose the main flavor of our tiers. It was our way of symbolically showing the blending of two families into one new one.
Now that the wedding day is over, is there anything about your planning process you feel you could have done differently?
We couldn’t really think of anything we wish we had done differently. We nailed down all of our vendors pretty early on, so that helped alleviate stresses as the wedding neared.
In one sentence, what words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning?
Don’t lose your joy stressing over the planning… and pray!
