Ali + Drew’s Sweet Campus Engagement Session by Kristin Sweeting

Monday, July 17, 2017

And so the story goes... boy meets girl in college and the rest is history! Ali + Drew met while attending Nashville's very own Vanderbilt University. With the help of Nashville-based travel photographer Kristin Sweeting, the couple revisited their beginnings and shot their engagement photos around campus! From Peabody Lawn to Hawkins Field, each place held significance to the couple. Drew's strong ties to the Vanderbilt baseball team - from his role as catcher all the way to Assistant Athletic Director, let's just say Vandy baseball has been a huge part of their relationship. Showcasing the field and his jerseys in the photos was so them! I'll hand it over to Ali to tell y'all the rest of their story!

Tell us about your wedding!

Ali: We’re expecting around 275 guests at our wedding. We’re getting married at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in October, with the ceremony in the Rotunda (the actual Hall of Fame) and the reception upstairs in the Event Hall- breathtaking views of downtown Nashville through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. I grew up in New York, so with over half of our guests coming from out of town, we really wanted our wedding to be in the heart of downtown in a very “Nashville” location. The Country Music Hall of Fame is the perfect setting.

Who have you hired for your wedding team so far?

Venue/Catering | Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum

Photographer | Kristin Sweeting

Florist | Enchanted Florist

Cake | Dulce Desserts

Band | The Downtown Band

Wedding Coordination | Southern Social Event Co.

Dress | The Dress Theory

Videographer | Little Josh Productions

Ceremony Music | High Tone Entertainment

Hair/makeup | One10 Beauty

Invitations | Papyrus (in New York)

Tell us about your engagement session. Where did it take place?

Ali: We took our photos on Vanderbilt University’s campus. Not only do we think it’s the most beautiful spot in Nashville, but it’s also where we met, and where Drew works! Though we got engaged in December, we waited to take our pictures until June. The campus is in full bloom over the summer (did you know it’s a national arboretum?), and we wanted to wait until after graduation so that there were fewer students on campus when we were taking photos.

What’s the significance of the location(s)?

Ali: Where do I even start? We had the best time walking around campus, visiting the places that made (and still make!) Vanderbilt home to us. We started on Peabody’s campus, taking photos outside of the building that we met inside in 2009 when we had a class together. We took photos on Peabody Lawn before heading to Kirkland, Vanderbilt’s iconic clock town building. I love the photos taken on the stairs here; we look so relaxed and the sun was just starting to set. We made a quick outfit change (bye high heels!) and headed to Hawkins Field, Vanderbilt’s baseball field, a place where Drew has spent more hours than I could possibly count. He was a catcher on the team throughout college, and then worked on staff for the baseball team for four years before transitioning to an Assistant Athletic Director role. I’ve loved getting to know this special place and cheering on the team from the stands. We even snuck in a few photos wearing Drew’s old jerseys :)

What was it like working with your photographer?

Ali: Working with Kristin is a total dream. We clicked with her the first time we met, and knew she’d be the perfect person to capture our wedding. She values tradition and family, and loves to have fun. She made us feel relaxed and comfortable, and shooting on film makes her photos timeless and magical.

Thank you so much for sharing your photos with us, Ali! They are beautiful! Check out more of Kristin Sweeting's work here on her website and also follow along on Instagram to see her work - she's currently in Paris with other area (and beyond!) photographers!

How did you get engaged?  Tell us about your proposal!

Sasha: My sister had planned an Easter egg hunt at my parents' house for her two little boys the day before Easter (2016) and asked Derek and I to come along for the fun. As she followed the boys around snapping pictures, Derek pointed to the top of my parent's driveway and said there might be more eggs up here and had me go with him to look. He spilled his heart to me on the walk there, and I was met with "Will you marry me?" spelled out in Easter eggs as he got down on one knee. Of course I said yes! When we went back inside, both of our families were waiting on us for a celebratory dinner.

How many guests are you expecting?

Sasha: Around 325

What’s your approach to your wedding budget?

Sasha: Although I won't say our exact budget, I will say that we had to increase it after finding out just how expensive wedding vendors can be. My sister's wedding was 9 years ago, and my mom has said prices have largely increased since that time. We are using it as a guide but definitely have some flexibility, we are splurging on the things that are important to us, while still trying to be budget conscious and finding ways to save where we can.

Who have you hired for your wedding team so far?

Sasha: We have most of our vendors booked already. Our wedding is in June so its getting to crunch time!

What’s your wedding style?

Sasha: I'd say our style is urban and elegant. Our reception is at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY where both Derek and I grew up. We love the modern appeal of the museum, and are incorporating a crisp lined looked from our flowers to our graphics.

Tell us about your engagement session. Where did it take place?

Sasha: Our engagement session was a lot fun! We rented an airbnb in East Nashville for a kitchen to use, and also took pictures around the five points area. We were afraid it might be a little awkward, but ended up just being a lot of laughing and fun.

What’s the significance of the location(s)?

Sasha: We told Jim & Ilde our vision for the shoot and they brought it to life. We told them about ourselves and that it wouldn't fit our personalities to stand in a field for a photoshoot, and that we would love to do something food related, so they recommended East Nashville to us. The kitchen we were in for that part of the shoot was rented via airbnb. We also really wanted our dog, Warren, to be in some of the pictures and they were happy to do so!

What was it like working with your photographer?

Sasha: They were awesome. Although we had FaceTime'd a few times prior to our shoot, we met in person for the first time the day of our engagement pictures. They were like instant friends, really laid back and fun. We felt comfortable around them and so it was easy to take the pictures and have fun with it.

What did you like most about the session?

Sasha: I loved that Jim & Ilde cared about what we told them we wanted and made it happen. I also liked how fun and easy it was to take pictures with them, they gave us direction when we needed it but also just had us goof around and the pictures turned out amazing.

Thanks so much for sharing these fun photos with us, Derek, Sasha + SheHeWe! You can check out more of SheHeWe's portfolio here on their website and also here on Instagram!

Gracie + Evan’s Whimsical Lakeside Engagement Shoot by Catherine Cansler Akins

Wednesday, July 5, 2017

A friendship that blossoms into a romance is so very special! Knowing you can hang out and have a good time first before the relationship begins is one way to truly know you've found your match. This is Gracie + Evan's true story! Photographer, Catherine Cansler Atkins shares a special bond with the couple as Gracie is her little sister. After the sisters' tragic loss of their father, Evan stepped in to support their family in any way he could - just as a true gentleman would. From seeing the heart Evan put into their family, Gracie knew he was the one. What an incredibly moving story behind this couple's journey to love! Keep scrolling to hear all about this gorgeous couple from Catherine's perspective not only as their photographer, but also as their family member...

Location | Ramble Creek Vineyards

From the photographer, Catherine: I love all of my engagement sessions and all of my brides, but this particular session is a little more special and stands out more than the rest because the future bride in these photos is my baby sister! I introduced Gracie and Evan, as Evan used to be my primary second shooter. Once he laid eyes on Gracie for the first time, four years ago, he was smitten... I mean look at her! GORGEOUS. What started out as friendship slowly, and I mean SLOWLY, grew into more. Even though Evan knew his feelings for Gracie were solid from the start, she was not so sure. During the uncertainty of figuring out their relationship almost three years ago, we lost our dad in a tragic accident and while we all thought the relationship may crumble, it became concrete, and it was then that we knew Evan and Gracie would be more of a "forever" thing rather than a friendship after all! Gracie watched Evan step up in our family, and began to not only take care of her, but everyone else as well. Their love story is unique, and these engagement photos were taken at our "happy place," and where we feel closest to our dad, in Spring City, Tennessee at Watt's Bar Lake. It was his place to unwind and relax, and It is also where Gracie and Evan's friendship started out, and so it has more than one meaning for us all. What I love most about these photos is that they hold significant meaning for me, because not only do I know these two and the love that they share for one another, but I can see it radiating off of them and I know the deep story that lies within.

Wow - what an incredibly touching story! Thank you so much for sharing your sister and soon-to-be brother in law's engagement session with us, Catherine! You can check out more of her work here on her website and also be sure to follow along on Catherine's journey here on her Instagram page

This fairytale-loving couple has opted for a fairytale wedding at the historic Union Station Hotel in downtown Nashville! After Jennifer + William's Disney engagement, they decided on a destination wedding in Nashville since it's a great central location for all the family traveling in to see the couple tie the knot. Sadly it poured rain on the day of their engagement photo session, so Zoe of Zoe Life Photography suggested taking the shoot to where all the magic will happen - the Union Station Hotel. Their wedding planning seems to be going swimmingly, and I interviewed Jennifer to give us all the inside scoop on the shoot and her wedding plans! Check it all about below!

How did you get engaged?  Tell us about your proposal:

Jennifer: We got engaged November 10, 2015 in Disney World! My parents live in Florida and his family was in Orlando for two of his sisters' band trip. I love Disney (I go multiple times a year) so I thought we were just going to spend time with his family and ours (they were meeting for the first time) and it was just a nice vacation. On one of our last days, we spent the day running the parks and we returned to our hotel that even at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Before we went up to our room, Will asked if I wanted to take a walk around the grounds and take a look at all of the animals at night. After our walk we headed back up to the room and when I walked in the room was covered in rose petals with candles and an engraved Cinderella shoe sitting on the table next to a little blue box! After that he got on his knee as asked me to marry him! I immediately said yes and we spent the rest of the evening celebrating with an amazing bottle of wine my dad have given us and sharing the news with friends and family! The room was set up so beautifully and I love the little glass shoe as a keepsake to remind us of the day!

How many guests are you expecting?

Jennifer: About 85 guests, all family and close friends.

What’s your approach to your wedding budget?

Jennifer: Our Budget is around $25,000 but if needed we could go a little higher. We're using that number as a guide but we have some flexibility. We tried really hard to keep it as close as possible.

What’s your wedding style?

Jennifer: I would call my wedding style vintage romantic. I love the old hollywood glamour vibe, but didn't want it to scream "Great Gatsby" wedding or being older and a little stuffy. I joked with a lot of family and friends that it was a Tower Of Terror themed wedding - back when the hotel was in it's glory days obviously haha! But we have a lot of gold and wine/burgundy colors and our venue goes along perfectly with the feeling we wanted!

What have you most enjoyed about being engaged?

Jennifer: I think we've enjoyed just getting to plan a special day for us that we can celebrate with friends and family! I don't think I could pick just one thing I've enjoyed most!

Tell us about your engagement session. Where did it take place?

Jennifer: We don't live in Nashville but would love to when we buy a house, so that was some of the inspiration behind a Nashville destination wedding. It was also in the middle of both of our families so it was a great place for everyone to come together. We planned a trip in April to visit and get a lot of planning done and our original engagement shoot was schedule for Sunday in Centennial Park around sunset. Plans changed though when it proceeded to rain the entire weekend with no sign of stopping so we had to find a place to relocate to! Luckily Union Station said we could have our photoshoot there! It was absolutely beautiful, with the scenery and the atmosphere of the building it was such a fun experience and it was great to spend a little more time at our actual wedding venue and scope out some awesome places to take photos on the day! We were definitely a little stiff at first but Zoe, our photographer, made us feel incredibly comfortable and encouraged us to just talk and be ourselves and from then on we had a great session!

What did you like most about the session?

Jennifer: It's hard to pick just one thing! First off the venue was beautiful but I think one of my favorite things was just getting some beautiful photos done that really capture the two of us! I always joke that we don't have any pictures together so being able to look back on these is really special! Zoe was also great at having really creative ideas to get some gorgeous shots and she also made us feel comfortable in front of the camera. She did an amazing job capturing the essence of our relationship and we got a lot of beautiful photos our of our session! I wasn't originally planning on using a photos of us on our wedding invites but we loved the photos so much that we ended up using one when designed the invitations! Overall it was a successful day!

Thanks for sharing this beautiful engagement session with us today, Zoe! And thank you to Jennifer for being so candid about your wedding plans - congrats! You can find more of Zoe Life Photography's work here on her webiste and also here on Instagram. :)

An Old Fashioned Sweetheart Styled Shoot at Gray’s on Main by Amy Allmand

Monday, June 26, 2017

Simple, sweet and old-timey is such a fun theme for a styled shoot - and downtown Franklin is the perfect place to host a shoot like this! Photographer Amy Allmand and her styled shoot team created a romantic scene around the couple Natalie + Hayden at Franklin's historic restaurant Gray's on Main. I love how their concept can be interpreted in many different ways - it's not quite an engagement, elopement or anniversary shoot - it's simply a sweet couple who wanted to get dressed up for a night on the town - no matter what the occasion! Natalie's vintage-inspired 50's style dress and Hayden's classic suit set the scene for images that could have been taken today or 50+ years ago! See the rest of the photos and hear more about the shoot below!

Sweetheart Styled Shoot

Gray's on Main, Franklin, TN

1.10.17

Styled Shoot Team:

Photographer | Amy Allmand Photography

Hair + Makeup | Madison Dennis of MHD Beauty

Location | Gray's on Main in Downtown Franklin

Dress | BCBG

Tell us about the shoot and who was a part of it!

Amy: I wanted to do a Valentine's theme sweetheart shoot somewhere in downtown Franklin. I collaborated with my hair & make-up artist, Madison Dennis of MHD Beauty. Madison found our models, Natalie & Hayden while I worked with Joni at Gray's for the location. She knew that I was going for an old Hollywood glamour feel. Hayden wore his own suit and Natalie wore a black & white BCBG strapless tulle dress that I personally own. She wore her own red shoes, which was requested along with lips to match.

What was the theme and what inspired it?

Amy: Valentine's, sweetheart, love, vintage. The color scheme was based around the black & white BCBG strapless tulle dress. Keeping that scheme simple we added in her red shoes and lipstick as the accent.

Can you share any special moments or highlights of the day?

Amy: Natalie & Hayden are a real couple who had never been to Franklin, so it was fun for them to see a new place. We shot at around 3pm, in between their lunch and dinner so that we had the restaurant virtually to ourselves. Gray's was so gracious to pull out some of their Valentine's decorations a bit early to add a little bit of love ambiance. She also let us shoot in their private 3rd floor room which was pretty amazing.

Were there any special requests or unique challenges that you had to work together to overcome?

Amy: Yes, unfortunately it did rain quite a bit that day. My plan was to also to shoot in front of the Franklin Theatre marquee to have a full date night styled shoot, but that was not meant to be. I still love how it turned out even without that part of the vision.

Thanks so much for sharing this warm sweetheart shoot with us, Amy! You can check out more of her work here on her website and also here on Instagram - Happy Monday!
